I can get as excited about pretty office supplies and a sale at The Container Store as the next person, but truth be told, I'm more interested in the deeper meaning of why we do what we do. Why do we keep what we keep? Why do we hold on to things that don't serve us? Is it really just because we "don't have time" to clean up our homes or is it more complicated than that? What does the state of our homes say about how we feel about our lives? I believe that our homes are a mirror for our inner lives and circumstances. That there is a direct correlation between how we treat our belongings and our internal dialogue of how we feel about ourselves, our past, our futures and our values. Have you ever walked into a room in your house and just felt the energy drain out of you when you look at all that needs to be done? My kids' rooms can feel that way to me.

The rest of my house is usually in pretty good shape (as in, I'd let people come in my house and not die of embarrassment) but the kids room? It can go from semi-tidy to where's the floor in well under an hour.

Even though I live and breatheorganizing, decluttering and beautifying, my kids room drives. me. nuts. It's not my stuff and I don't like to declutter it by myself, yet when I help them clean and declutter it I don't always have the patience of a saint when they are agonizing over every Lego, birthday party favor and note passed in class.
